ADVISORY COUNCIL ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES • Guide CCI in development of CNS exam • Make recommendations based on expert opinion/experience/EBP • Initiatives: • Draft eligibility criteria for test applicants • Recommend members for test development committees • Assist in dissemination of appropriate information to community 14
WHY A CNS EXAM? • APRN’s provide the same quality of care as physicians at less cost and with higher levels of patient satisfaction. 1, 2 • At this time there is no certification specifically for perioperative APRN’s. • Surveys conducted by both AORN and CCI show an interest in validating advanced practice for nurses in the perioperative setting. • CNS role is less well-recognized; certification may enhance visibility of this group. 15
PLAYERS WITH INPUT ON EXAM DEVELOPMENT • State boards of Nursing • Definition of APRN • Licensure • Accreditation bodies • CCI • Policies and procedures 16
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA for CNS EXAM APPLICANTS • Must meet state, accrediting, and CCI regulations/guidelines • Community standards are included in link to resources • Look at long-term as well as immediate advanced practice needs e. g. Consensus Model, DNP, etc. 18
TEST DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW • Test development committees • Job analysis • Item writers • Item reviewers • Item analysis/form review • Beta launch • Standard setting/cut score • Publish test 19
PROGRESS IN 2011 CCI convened two task forces who: • developed competency statements for perioperative APRN’s (based on AORN, NACNS, and Critical Care NP competency statements) • completed a gap analysis to ensure that CNS and NP competencies are accurately reflected in perioperative APRN competency statements • With our testing partner, Prometric, launched a Job Analysis survey in March 2011 to ensure that the competency statements were accurately represented in the workplace.
JOB ANALYSIS • Assures that the role of the APRN is accurately reflected in an exam. • Identified domains: • Clinical expert in delivery of advanced perioperative care • Consultant (intra- and multidisciplinary) • Education (nurse, other healthcare providers, patient, family, and community) • Clinical inquiry • Organizational/systems thinking • Professional accountability 21
RESULTS OF JA SURVEY • 145 people completed the survey 22

RESULTS OF KNOWLEDGE PORTION OF SURVEY 24
RESULTS OF TASK PORTION OF SURVEY 25
NICE CHARTS-BUT WHAT DO THEY MEAN? • If the subgroup means are above the critical importance value (mean ratings at or above 2. 50), then they are in agreement that the content is important. • An exam could be built with confidence using these task and knowledge statements. 26
