Anna Marie Tussau December 12, 1761, Strasbourg - April 18, 1850, London) - sculptor, founder of the famous wax museum Madame Tussauds London.
Mary was born under the name of Marie Grosgolts (it. Marie Grosholtz) in a family of Alsatian officer Joseph Grosgoltsa and Swiss Anna Maria Walter. Her father was killed in the Seven Years' War, shortly before the birth of Marie; after his death, the mother and children moved to Bern and started working as a housekeeper Dr. Philippe Curtius Wilhelm (1741 -1794). Curtius made of wax anatomical models, and later engaged in the manufacture of wax figures, portraits. In 1765 Curtius moved to Paris and founded his studio. Marie with her mother moved in with him in 1767 - the mother continued to work as a housekeeper, and Marie began to learn the art of making wax sculptures.
In 1802, Marie and her husband decided to leave, taking with him a four-year senior Joseph and his collection went on a tour of the UK. Since the beginning of the reign of Napoleon and the deterioration of relations between the two countries, she could not go back and continued to travel around the UK and Ireland. After the fall of Napoleon, her younger son Francois joined her, and in 1835 it equipped its first permanent exhibition, in a place now Baker Street, which was the beginning of her famous museum.
Some of the sculptures were destroyed, but were again restored by templates that Marie kept. In 1842, she made her sculpture, which is still preserved in the Museum of Madame Tussauds.
