What is Banner? • All data reside in one database – Information shared among all applications – Will use generated IDs with SSN as a searchable alternate ID • Pushes functionality out of the IT area • Individuals can customize their views of Banner Monroe Community College 5
Why Implement Banner • MCC’s current SCT PLUS products are 15+ years old • PLUS system is based upon mainframe systems (flat files) that do not support full integration of data that can be shared across modules • Banner product is enhanced by the SUNY SICAS center Monroe Community College 6
Implementation Timeframe 2003 - 2006 • • • Start-up phase April 1 – August 31, 2003 Year 1 Finance (September, 2004) Year 2 Human Resources (January, 2005) Year 2 Advancement (September 2005) Year 3 Banner Student (October 2005 September 2006) • Year 3 Banner Financial Aid (March 2006) Monroe Community College 7

Efforts to Date • Banner application seed data, test instances and pre-production running on MCC’s servers • SCT Banner training for Banner team is underway for three modules • Data Standards document developed • Reporting inventory underway • Banner website developed in Manila Monroe Community College 15
Efforts to Date • • Initial data scrubbing has begun Business Process Analysis (BPAs) on-going Data Mapping sessions underway Internal Banner navigation training developed by IT • End User training plans in development – Power users of Purchasing system to be trained as first end user cohort Monroe Community College 16
Banner Benefits • College records will be housed in one large relational database – information retrieved and reports generated will draw from current, non-duplicative system information – Students have greater access to information • Banner will bring closure to the problems associated with systems that "don’t talk to each other" • Banner will allow access to information via a web browser in a highly secured and stable environment Monroe Community College 17
Impact on MCC • Moratorium on current system changes - System revisions for compliance with regulatory issues only • Business Process Analysis (BPA) • End-user training • Same timeframe as SUNY Mission Review and Middle States Monroe Community College 18
Impact on MCC • Purchasing cut-off date for 2003 -04 has been moved up to June 11 th • MCC’s Open Enrollment period for 2004 -05 will be moved up to @November, 2004 • MCC will be working off of two systems—PLUS and Banner—for the duration of the implementation • MCC end users can better utilize Excel and Access to manipulate Banner data Monroe Community College 19
Impact on MCC after Implementation • Access to data for students, faculty and staff will be improved • Reports will be generated in a different way – End users will have better access to reports • Learning curve for end users will be steep and then will diminish – PLUS system took over 15 years to be customized Monroe Community College 20
Banner Preparation • What can I do now to prepare for Banner? – Consider departmental processes and reporting needs – Enhance technical skills in Excel and Access – View the resources on the Banner web page – Talk to colleagues at other Banner institutions Monroe Community College 21
