Aims • To give an overview of the national picture of mental health • Evidence for what works to support young people in this area • To reflect on practical solutions for your setting
Mental Health: Definition “A state of wellbeing in which every individual recognises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her own community. ” World Health Organization, 2014
True or False? a) 1 in 4 adults are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year b) Half of all mental ill health starts before age 18 c) Mental ill health is the second largest cause of disability in the UK d) 6% YP may have self-harmed (based on self report data) e) Suicide is the leading cause of death for YP (up to age 35) f) 1 in 10 children are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year
National Picture • One in four adults and one in ten children are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year (Mental Health Core Skills Framework, 2016). • Half of all mental ill health starts before age 14 (Future in Mind, 2015) • 75% of mental health problems in adult life start before the age of 18 (Future in Mind, 2015) • Mental ill health is largest cause of disability in the UK (No Health without Mental Health, 2011) • 6%-20% YP may have self-harmed (Improving YP’s Health and Wellbeing, 2015) • Suicide is the leading cause of death for YP (up to age 35) (Papyrus, and Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health)
Govt. Expectations • 5 year plan Children – increasing access from 25% to 35% by 2020/21 • - eating disorders 95% target • Will be training more people • 5 Year plan Adults – 60% first episode psychosis – treatment within 2 weeks • - Individual placement and support – employment specialists within these services to be expanded • IAPT – psychosis, bipolar disorder and personality disorder • “over time we would expect to see all schools providing access to counselling services. ” (Counselling in Schools, 2016)
Future in Mind (2015) “Create an expectation that there should be a specific individual responsible for mental health in schools” “Anybody who works with young people in universal settings, such as colleges, should have training in C/YPs development and behaviours as appropriate to their professional role. ”
