Legislation • Nurses Act 1950 – answerable to the Oireachtas under the Minister for Health & Children • Register of nurses - part IV- Nurses Act 1985 65, 415 on (live) ‘active’ register – 2010 mandatory to work – annual fee 17, 150 – ‘inactive’ register – no fee
• Board / Committee meet bi-monthly • Consists of 22 members from all disciplines of nursing as well as medical profession and nominated representative from Minister for Health & Children
Fitness to practice Any person may make a complaint against a nurse on the active file for • A) alleged professional misconduct or • B) alleged unfit to engage in such practice by reason of physical or mental disability
• Board will request formal report be made • Board will write to the ‘nurse’ outlining the complaint & requests he/she replies giving their comments on that complaint with advice from their union / legal team. • All documentation reviewed by Board • Board decides if there is a prima facie case & inquiry will follow – all involved are informed • If not, case file is closed.
Services available • Publications – regular NEWS –quarterly with up to date information on research articles available in their library, guidelines on fitness to practice, conferences / events, outcomes of appeal procedures and general news interests to the nursing profession. • Library – available for use by all nurses registered on active file • Research scholarships available
