Food in the United States is one of the most controversial subjects. People think about it as being all fast-food, full of sugar and fats. But is it limited to this? American food is very diverse. Time Frame ▪ Breakfast – early (6. 30 – 8. 00) ▪ Lunch – 11. 00 am is already considered to be a normal lunch time. Typically restaurants will offer lunch 11. 00 a. m. -3. 00 p. m. ▪ Dinner – The word “supper” is not usually used. Dinner time is about 5. 00 pm – 6. 00 pm
Eating Out ▪ Americans eat out a lot. Of course, it depends on their income. Middle class American will eat out quite often. ▪ An average lunch is at least $8 + tax + tips. ▪ An average dinner is at least $15 + tax + tips ▪ Tips are very common. The amount of it may be calculated for you and printed on the check. The average tip is about 20% of the total price. You may leave cash on the table, in the book, or include it in the total price when you pay by card.
Salad Dressings ▪ When you order a salad, the waitress will ask you what kind of dressing you want. These are typically your options: ranch, blue cheese, thousand island, Italian, raspberry vinaigrette, French, Catalina, salad dressing, etc.
On the go ▪ Americans depend on their cars and spend hours on the road. This is one of the reasons why you can see drive-through fastfood restaurants everywhere. Mc. Donald’s is the most popular one, but there are plenty of other ones. ▪ You don’t need to get out from your car and the service is pretty quick. The quality of food is not considered to be the best though. Typically you don’t leave a tip at these restaurants.
Drinks ▪ Americans are mainly not tea-drinkers. As we discussed it earlier, sweet ice tea is very popular in the South, but it is not typical anywhere else in the country. ▪ Hot tea is not usually served, unless it’s a coffee shop* or an exception. ▪ Drinks are served with ice. Even juice. * Coffee shop – is not only a shop, rather it’s a café where you can buy a wide variety of coffee drinks.
