What is AAL 169? • Article 169 (of the EC treaty) states that the European Commission may support a member state driven initiative on RTD • AAL 169 may start as a new multinational and multiannual research and innovation funding programme in 2007 (after having successfully passed the codecision procedure of the Council and the EU Parliament) • Budget scenario: 25% AAL states, 25% EU, 50% Industry Total volume: 700 Mio € / 7 years 2 Michael Huch
What is AAL 169? (2) • A new way of European co-operation of ministries and programme managing agencies – Common elaboration of work programmes and calls – Common evaluation of projects – Common administration of projects • Activities: Up to two calls for proposals for research and innovation projects (cost-shared) per year • Calling for strong user involvement in the projects • Call topics will be pre-defined (top-down), but discussed by researchers and users in pre-call workshops 3 Michael Huch
Vision of AAL 169 Ambient Assisted Living aims at prolongating the time people can live in a decent way in their own home environment by - increasing their autonomy and self-confidence, - the discharge of monotonously everyday activities, - monitoring and caring for the elderly or ill person, - enhancing the security and - saving resources. 4 Michael Huch
