She goes onto Amazon and browses to the relevant section of the website…

She clicks ADD TO BASKET to start the ordering process.

She presses SUBMIT and confirms her delivery address

She is an Amazon PRIME member, so chooses next day delivery

A transaction is set up, which will debit the amount of money from her account once the order has been fulfilled.

For the purposes of monitoring and analytics, a note is made of the time and date of the order. Some are time critical.

An order is generated and sent to the nearest fulfilment centre, based on Miss K’s postcode.

Inventory in fulfillment centres is checked, and whether it is an order from an associate or reseller – if no inventory, the order is passed to another fulfilment centre

A robot fetches the item from the warehouse shelves. Each item is allocated a unique code when it arrives in the warehouse.

The item is ‘picked’ and sent by conveyor belt to be packaged.

Packaging is selected, so that the item is protected, but waste is reduced. A bar code is attached so that it is sent ao an appropriate lorry for dispatch.

Inventory is changed, so that the number ‘in stock’ is reduced by the number of items ordered. If this drops below a certain threshold, more stock is ordered in. This is based on previous order data.

The system waits for confirmation that the order has been dispatched within the timeframe for this to happen. , and also that it has been delivered.

The parcel is delivered to Miss K by a method that is allocated according to the delivery address, and customer choice.

Miss K carries on printing her newsletters… until the ink runs out again….
