Growing Up… *Alice was born on January 11, 1885 into a Quaker family.

Her Early Life When Alice was a child she loved reading, and school. One of her greatest role models while she was young and through out her life was Susan B. Anthony

National American Women Association. After graduating from college in 1912 Alice joined the National American Women Association.

Alice was quickly appointed head of the Congressional Committee in charge of working for a federal amendment.

The Suffragists take action. To get national attention for their cause the women planned a massive parade for women to march up Pennsylvania Ave. at Woodrow Wilson’s presidential inauguration.

The “Silent Sentinels” After then the National Women’s party organized the “silent sentinels” who held banners with questions directed to the president.

The Suffragists outside the White House

Wartime President In 1917, America joined World War I and the suffragists still picketed the president. Many thought is was unpatriotic to do so, causing some of the suffragists to be arrested. While the suffragists were in jail word got out that the women were treated inhumanly causing sympathy to their cause.

The Nineteenth Amendment In 1917 the president announced his support to the suffrage amendment. On August 18, 1920, women gained the right to vote after a VERY long battle.

The Creative Problem Solver Alice Paul died on July 9, 1977, and was 92 years old. She is called a creative problem solver because she went through many obstacles but always found a creative way to over come them. She showed that with perseverance and hard work you can accomplish anything.
