Geography • U. S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. • Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 4 th least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. • Approximately half of Alaska's 731, 449 residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area.
Economy • Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance. • Tourism is also a significant part of the economy. • Ranks second in the nation in crude oil production.
State politics • Like all other U. S. states, Alaska is governed as a republic, with three branches of government. • The state has an independence movement favoring a vote on secession from the United States, with the Alaskan Independence Party.
Culture • Some of Alaska's popular annual events are the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. • There are many established music festivals in Alaska, including the Alaska Folk Festival, the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, the Athabascan Old-Time Fiddling Festival, the Sitka Jazz Festival, and the Sitka Summer Music Festival.
