Air Breathing Propulsion Awarded for meritorious, career-spanning accomplishment in the science or art of Air Breathing Propulsion u Award can be given only if a minimum of 3 nominations are active. u Chronic problems obtaining the requisite 3 nominations and maintaining an appropriate nomination pool. u Nominations are only active for a total of three cycles. u Four nominations this year u To maintain active nominations in the pipeline, we need at least TWO additional nomination prior to October 1 st. u Each Technical Discipline Area Lead (Turbine Engine, High-Speed Propulsion and Propulsion Integration) is asked to ensure at least one nomination package is submitted in his Technical Discipline in a given cycle. Other TC members are also asked to encourage nominations. 96 u Please have nominator advise Jinho Lee of “intent to nominate” as soon as possible. POC for 2009 – Jinho Lee
Air Breathing Propulsion Award Selection Process u AIAA membership not obligatory to receive award (although may be tiebreaker) u Selection Team now consists of 5 or 6 people as follows: u ABPTC Chair, u Honors & Awards Subcommittee Chair, u Relevant Technical Discipline Area Lead(s) u Representative of the Propellants and Combustion TC. u If only one Technical Discipline Area is relevant, the ABPTC Chair will appoint TC member(s) to be the 5 th selection team member. If all three Technical Discipline Areas are relevant, the team will comprise 6 members. 97
Air Breathing Propulsion Award Selection Process Continued u The selection team’s decision must be endorsed by an e-mail vote of at least 50% of the ABPTC and P&C TC. u ABPTC and P&C TC Chairs and Group Director must approve final selection by ensuring process was followed. u Documented, quantitative grading scale (audit trail) with minimum threshold below which award is not given out. ü New scoring sheet developed ü For ABP award, minimum threshold will be 100 points (150 points is perfect score) 98

Gordon C. Oates Graduate Award • The deadline for the Gordon C. Oates Graduate Award is 31 January. The award has moved to an online submission process, which facilitates evaluating candidates and selecting the winner. • The new online process has encouraged self-nomination for all available AIAA awards regardless of applicability. Some reference letters are now not specific and cite support only for “the AIAA award”. • Please help publicize this award among current and future graduate students to strengthen the pool of candidates. 102
ABP Best Paper Awarded for the best technical paper presented in an Air Breathing Propulsion Session at the 2007 Joint Propulsion Conference or 2008 Aerospace Sciences Conference u AIAA provides copies of ABP session forms from both conferences (usually significant time lag) u Process improvement: ABP Technical Organizer forwards copies of Session Chair Forms to Honors & Awards at end of conference. u Session chairs at ASM are requested to nominate one paper in their session and submit completed session chair form to DR Reddy or AIAA before departing Aeroscience Meeting. u 2007/2008 recipient: AIAA 2008 -107, “The Time-Resolved Flow within an Unsteady Ejector” Jonathan J H Heffer, Robert J Miller and Chris Freeman Whittle Laboratory, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom 103 POC for 2009 – James Donohue

Please reply promptly and keep the information confidential. 105

ASM/JPC Subcommittee Briefing Committee Goal/Charter “Facilitate high quality ABP papers and presentations at ASM/JPC meetings. ”
Pro-active Steps Better Papers • Abstracts must meet AIAA minimum paper standards • Abstracts will be reviewed by at least 2 people and some REJECTED: 1. Poor quality 2. Poor fit/wrong topic 3. Full sessions in that topic Improved Presentations (i. e. minimize no-shows) • Ensure abstract completeness • Contact foreign authors (and authors requiring clearance) • More invited speakers/special sessions
Infrastructure Accountability within Committees • Technical chairs identified each year • Specialty sub-chairs identified each year (as desired)? • Sub-chairs should be in contact with session chairs Volunteers (i. e. , any TC member) • Review abstracts • Serve as session chairs (and return chair forms!) • Arrange invited speakers/special sessions
