AED presented by Trizec Overseas Private Limited
What is an AED? Automated External Defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation.
Opto Circuits (India) Ltd. Life Threatening Arrythmias All Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are designed to treat a patient that is: Unresponsive Not breathing normally Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) AEDs treat two specific fast arrythmias: Ventricular fibrillation (VF) Pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT) Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) 3
How AEDs can benefit you? AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layman, with simple audio and visual commands to treat any patient at Sudden Cardiac Arrest as a first responder.

Why is the world adopting to AEDs? Can't we just call 101? Sudden Cardiac Arrest needs immediate defibrillation. The first two minutes of the SCA is called as the golden moment and it provides a survival chance of 90 -80% if used an AED for the patient. Any ambulance globally takes more than 10 minutes to reach the patient for assistance, where the survival rate for any cardiac events is 0% for 10 th minute. We have come across many who are dead with sudden cardiac arrest in hospital premises, itself. The rule book says the survival rate decreases drastically with every passing minute from the cardiac arrest time. AEDs offer a practical and proven way to save more lives. Widespread deployment of AEDs in public places gives SCA victims the best chance of survival.
Who can operate an AED? • AEDs are easy to operate and they automatically analyzes the victims condition of the heart, his pulse, BP, ECG etc and if warranted, delivers an electric impulse to the heart to reverse SCA. • The automated voice prompt would guide in detail the process as well as every procedure is electronically stored in the machine for future use by the doctor. • They are designed to be used by virtually any layman with or without minimal training
U. S Law for AED Cardiac Arrest Survival Act, was passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton in 2000.
Japan’s Law for AED • Japan's ministry of health, labor and welfare has passed the law in 2004 on the use of AEDs in common places.
UK Law for AED • The resuscitation council (UK) recommended to enable the common law for UK through a national defibrillator programme with medicines legislations in the year 2001

The Problem of Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Opto Circuits (India) Ltd. Sudden Cardiac Arrest: The Problem 36
Opto Circuits (India) Ltd. SCA in India There is currently no country-wide official statistics relating to sudden cardiac arrest in India. However one study¹ has estimated that: Sudden Cardiac Deaths account for more than 40 -45 % of cardiovascular deaths in India The survival rate of a sudden cardiac arrest is almost less than 1% in India ¹ Sudden Cardiac Arrest : who is at risk, causes, symptoms & prevention; Wockhardt Hospitals Guide to Wellness; Feb 8, 2010 37
Opto Circuits (India) Ltd. Causes of SCA • Coronary artery disease • Acute coronary syndromes • Electrocution • Drug toxicity and sensitivity • Asphyxia • Drowning • Cardio Myopathy • Blunt force trauma to the chest – Commotio Cordis 38
Symptoms and Signs that may indicate an increased risk for SCA • • An abnormal heart rate or rhythm (arrhythmia) of unknown cause. An unusually rapid heart rate ( tachycardia) that comes and goes, even when the person is at rest. Episodes of fainting ( Syncope) of unknown cause. Low ejection fraction (EF)
Opto Circuits (India) Ltd. Time is Key “Survival rates after VF cardiac arrest decrease approximately 7% to 10% with every minute that defibrillation is delayed. ” p I-61 Source: Guidelines 2000 for Cardiovascular Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. The Solution to Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Opto Circuits (India) Ltd. Automated External Defibrillators (AED) 42
Opto Circuits (India) Ltd. Easy to Use Cardiac Science AEDs are easy to use: 1. Open the lid 2. Place the defibrillation pads on the patient (pads are non-side specific and pre-connected for ease of use). 3. The automatic AED will analyze and, if appropriate, deliver a ‘electrical impulse’ to the patient without any rescuer intervention. 43
