James L. Mills Received his MS in epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania, and his M. D. from New York Medical College. His primary research interest is the etiology of birth defects. He has worked for the last decade on genetic and biochemical risk factors for NTDs and other folate-related birth defects. Directs the NICHD University of Chile Alcohol in Pregnancy Study - a prospective study in collaboration with investigators at the University of Chile in Santiago. It is designed to determine the effects of heavy alcohol exposure on the fetus. Heavy drinking women were identified by screening at prenatal care, advised on the dangers of drinking while pregnant, and asked to participate in the study. Selected Publications Avaria M, Mills JL, Kleinsteuber K, Aros S, Conley MR, Cox C, Klebanoff M, & Cassorla F. (2004). William Fifer Georgetown University BA , University of North Carolina, Ph. D. in Devel Psychology Fellowship: Albert Einstein College of Medicine Dr. Fifer's research interests focus on fetal and neonatal behavioral, perceptual and autonomic nervous system development. Current investigations in his laboratory include studies of fetal, newborn and premature infant neurobehavioral responses to sensory stimulation, infant sleep physiology , and the effects of in utero experience on later neurodevelopment. He has active collaborations within the Departments of Psychiatry, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Behavioral Medicine at Columbia and the Indian Health Service that focus on the effects of maternal anxiety, depression and alcohol use during pregnancy on the developing fetus, the relationship between diet and sleep in premature infants, development of autonomic control, and assessment of risk for neurological disorders including Sudden Infant Death and Autism. He and his colleagues are currently involved in large fetal/infant cohort studies New York City , in North and South Dakota , and in Cape Town , South Africa.
