1. What are Adverbs? l An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb l An adverb will NEVER modify a noun or pronoun…. EVER. l Those are ADJECTIVES!!!!
Example She ran quickly into the big house. l l Quickly is modifying the VERB ran. Quickly is an adverb. Big is modifying the NOUN house. Big is an adjective. Your Example: Write an example on your Flipbook flap.
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs by asking: l l l l Where? When? How Often? How Long? To what extent? How much?
Examples l The sprinter ran swiftly. l I read the funny pages early on Sunday morning. l The fire blazed too wildly. l Put the apples there, and we will eat them later.
2. How to Spot an Adverb
The word “not” is almost always used as an adverb. Even in contractions! 1. 2. Many adverbs end in –ly. l l l Sometimes you can tack on the ending –ly to an adjective to turn it into an adverb Clear-ly Quiet-ly Conviencing-ly BE CAREFUL, some adjectives end in –ly too. So you must read the sentence carefully to determine what word it is modifying.
3. Adverbs can come before, after, and even between the words they modify! l l We often study together. We study together often. Often we study together. We have often studied together. 4. Adverbs may also introduce a question. These are always found at the beginning of the sentence. l l When does your school start? How did you spend your vacation?
3. Comparative Adverbs
Comparative Adverbs l l l 1. 2. 3. Comparative Adverbs: are used to show when one thing is/does better or worse than the other. l ONLY TWO THINGS ARE BEING COMPARED!!!! You create comparative adverbs by using “-er” to the end, or adding the word “more”. Examples: Jill did her homework more frequently than Tim. Jill did her homework faster than Bob. Jill was better at math. Your Example: Write an example on your Flipbook flap.
4. Superlative Adverbs
Superlative Adverbs l l l 1. 2. 3. Superlative Adverbs: are used to show when the highest degree of a verb l MORE THAN TWO THINGS ARE BEING COMPARED!!!! You create superlative adverbs by using “-est” to the end, or adding the word “most”. Examples: Jill did her homework most frequently than anyone in her class. Jill did her homework the fastest. Jill was best at math. Your Example: Write an example on your Flipbook flap.
5. Adverb Clauses
An Adverb Clause is a dependent clause that modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb. 2. An adverb clause will usually have a subordinating conjunction that introduces it. (after, before, until, while, because (and many more…), since, as, so that, in order that, if, unless, whether, though, although, even though, where). Examples: 1. • • • You clean the bathroom while I clean the carpet. Ann was confident that she would play the best. Bring in the toys before they get destroyed.
6. Adverb Phrases
1. An Adverb Phrase is a prepositional phrase or an infinitive phrase that modifies a verb. 2. Adverb Phrases cannot stand alone as a sentence. Examples: • The carpenter hit the nail with a hammer. • We must finish our project before the holidays. • I'm saving my money to buy a car. • The students all showed up to support the team.
