Abraham Father of the Faithful Friend of God
Three Common Errors The reader tends to believe the seed of Abraham to which the land is promised is limited to Israel from Joshua forward. The reader tends to believe the promise of the land to Abraham was fulfilled when Israel entered the land. Many believe God’s promise to Abraham to give him the land was fulfilled posthumously through Israel when they entered the land.
Uses of “Descendants” in ch. 15 1 child, Abraham’s heir of verse 4. Countless multitudes in v. 5 Jacob’s house who went to Egypt (70), v. 13 The fourth generation of these, v. 16 All the faithful sons of Abraham, v. 18
Misunderstood Verses De. 10. 22: “Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven. ” Joshua 21. 43 -45: So the LORD gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it. And the LORD gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hand. Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.
Clearly, this generation entered the Promised Land under the terms of a national conditional covenant; the bi-lateral Mosaic Covenant. De. 28. 62 -63: “Then you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of heaven for multitude, because you did not obey the LORD your God. And it shall come about that as the LORD delighted over you to prosper you, and multiply you, so the LORD will delight over you to make you perish and destroy you; and you shall be torn from the land where you are entering to possess it. ”

Why are Israel and the Exodus Generation Mentioned in ch. 15? The fourth generation’s arrival in the land proves the validity and continuity of the Abrahamic Covenant. Joshua’s entrance into the Land, it is not a fulfillment of Gen. 12. 7 or 13. 15. It refers to the promise of 15. 16; the prophecy proving the eternal land seed will one day be given. To comfort the Exodus generation. Exodus 6. 6 -8: “Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. ‘Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. ‘And I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am the LORD. ’”
God Affirms this Purpose of the Prophecy of the Exodus De. 7. 7 -8: “The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the LORD loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. ” De. 9. 5: “It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
