UFS Substitutes
UFS Substitute Grades – “Superbrites” § Equal Offset® (EO) – An 84 -bright surface-enhanced sheet engineered as a replacement for commodity uncoated offset available in 40, 42. 5, 45, 50 and 55# basis weights. § Innovative Offset™ (IO) – An 81 -bright cost-effective, surface-sized sheet that provides stiffness and print quality you demand while offering value; available in basis weights 35#, 40# and 45#. § Alternative Offset® (AO) – An 80 -bright uncoated sheet designed as a low-cost substitute for UFS available in basis weights ranging from 27 to 50#. Abitibi-Consolidated Overview – 9
Why Mechanical Papers § Mechanical pulp based papers offer lighter basis weights with high opacity and bulk § Lighter weights offer cost savings: lower distribution costs & more linear feet per ton § Mechanical pulping is a high yield process requiring 50% less wood fiber and is bleached using a TCF process § UFS buyers had limited options beyond brand names, until now… Abitibi-Consolidated Overview – 10
Environmental Benefits Over UFS § “Mechanical” pulping is a high-yield process requiring half the wood fiber to make 1 ton of pulp. – A 42. 5# EO sheet uses less wood fiber than a standard 50# UFS sheet containing 50% recycled content. § All “mechanical” fiber is bleached Totally Chlorine Free (TCF). – Equal Offset and Innovative Offset are TCF. Alternative Offset is either TCF or ECF (if manufactured at Fort Frances). Abitibi-Consolidated Overview – 11

Why Substitute for UFS? UFS IS AN OVER-ENGINEERED PRODUCT FOR MANY OF ITS CURRENT END-USES § Freesheet needs to be made in heavy weights to achieve acceptable levels of opacity and thickness. § Freesheet by definition is made from a chemical pulping process, which is a less efficient use of wood fiber. § Therefore, freesheet, by its very nature, may be an overengineered product for specific applications. § Do you really need a 92 brightness, 20 lb. sheet with archival properties for short life span products? Abitibi-Consolidated Overview – 13
Abi Offset Strategy § Our mission is “To be the world’s market leader in UFS substitutes. ” § Since product launch in 1995 we have grown from one machine/one mill to five machines/three mills; from 100, 000 to 700, 000 short tons of capacity. § Our vision is to grow through innovation delivering value to the market beyond current capacity and applications. What Do We Know? § Uncoated mechanical grades can be and are printed on many digital presses (Oce 7000 to 9000 series, IBM 4100’s, Xerox Docutech, HP Indigo, HP 3250, Delphax), ACI products included § ACI recognizes in that all digital equipment technology is not equal and in some cases there may be a need to redesign our paper products for digital printing § ACI recognizes that in the Direct mail markets our paper is already static printed Offset and digitally printed for many jobs § ACI recognizes that in many jobs controlled UV gain for OCR is important – Our Superbrites are quality controlled to stay within OCR Standard 1 § ACI has no converting capabilities at this time § ACI has experience selling into the B to B market Abitibi-Consolidated Overview – 20
What Are We Doing? § Focusing on developing a Laser MOCR guaranteed grade forms/statement market § Research work into developing an ink jet grade § Market research into acceptance of groundwood products § Full business assessment for Superbrite substitution vs. UFS (Folio, Cut-Size, etc. ) Abitibi-Consolidated Overview – 21
