ABIOTIC AND BIOTIC LIMITING FACTORS
What are the limiting factors? Factors which determine the types and numbers of organisms of a species in an ecosystem are called limiting factors. Many limiting factors restrict the growth of populations in nature.
We can classify the limiting factors as biotic and abiotic. Food resources Water , nutrients , sunlight, temperature, etc Depend on : 1) low food supply 2) lack of space
Abiotic limiting factors Nutrients can also cause unhealthy ecosystems. Too many nutrients can cause too much algae to grow in an aquatic ecosystem. When this happens, the bacteria that eat the algae use too much of the oxygen to allow other organisms to live there. Nutrient availability is also important for soil development.
In a desert ecosystem, for example, low rainfall and high temperature will be factors limiting colonization.
For example, low average temperature restricts the growth of plants in Arctic , thus the subsoil is permanently frozen.
Related Examples from History What happened in 1800’s ?
The Great Famine (Gorta Mór) or the Great Hunger was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852. A disease called potato blight destroyed much of the potato crop in Ireland. Since many Irish people depended on potatoes as their staple food, mass starvation and emigration resulted. This caused Ireland's population to dramatically decrease.
What is the carrying capacity? The carrying capacity is the maximum population size that can be supported in a particular area without destroying the habitat. Limiting factors determine the carrying capacity of a population.
Food Supply as Limiting Factor If there are 12 hamburgers at a lunch table and 24 people sit down at a lunch table, will everyone be able to eat?
What is biocenose ? A biocenosis ( biotic community, biological community, ecological community), coined by Karl Möbius in 1877, describes the interacting of organisms living together in a habitat (biotope). English-speaking scientists normally use the terms ecosystems or communities.
Based on the concept of biocenosis, ecological communities can take in various forms. Zoocenosis – faunal community, Phytocenosis - floral community, Microbiocenosis - microbial community. The geographical extent of a biocenose is limited by the requirement of a more or less uniform species composition.
