Year 2 Curriculum l l New curriculum now becoming embedded. Higher floor standards Freedom for staff to be creative Deep level learners - cross curricular, securing skills and applying to different contexts
LM Year 2 Curriculum Theme: Geography – ‘Carry on Explorers’ o Skills – using maps, features, comparing and contrasting, ICT o Knowledge - continents, oceans, capital cities l
Year 2 Curriculum l o o o English Fiction unit. Skills – word classes, sentence structure and punctuation, descriptive language, reading and responding. Moving on to non-fiction instructions Handwriting
KG Year 2 Curriculum l o o Maths Beginning with fundamental concepts: Place value, ordering, addition, subtraction, number bonds and number patterns Mental maths and English skills Every morning All mental maths skills covered and key English skills.
SL Year 2 Curriculum Science o Strong emphasis on practical, experimental approach. Factored in 2 Science experiences to embrace this. o Healthy me: -What keeps us fit and healthy -Healthy foods -Germs l
Assessment l o o o l l Purpose: Informs planning In line with the curriculum Achievements and next steps identified and shared with each child and parents Tailoring learning to each child End of term report/parents’ evening Relaxed atmosphere Assessment work shop will be run giving more detail on the system itself.
SATs l l l New papers in line with the new curriculum coverage - approach is still the same Subjects tested – Maths, Reading, Grammar punctuation & spelling (supports overall teacher assessment of writing) Teacher assessment still the final result Children thoroughly prepared by teaching through the curriculum, tailored learning, provision – support and challenge where required and familiarity with regular testing. Tailor SAT assessment to needs of individual children, e. g. 1: 1, small groups, extra time, scriber, readers etc. Take place May/June
Homework and Spellings l o o o Homework: Log books – child learning and deep level learning opportunities (in line with the new curriculum) Tailored to children’s learning Preparing them for transition to next key stage 2 Sent out on a WEDNESDAY and handed in a week MONDAY (12 days) Spellings: ACE and word maps Sent out on a Tuesday and spelling test on a Monday (no test on word maps) Following our phonics programme and curriculum word list.
