Why This Is Important For the Economy
Economically A Century Ago The U. S. led in the corporate vertical integration process Mining raw materials through selling to consumers Today U. S. is still a leader but in the reverse process Corporate analysis identify each step and outsource or insource to generate the lowest cost
Economically But. . This work is often performed by machines If someone (be they in India or Taiwan or California) can work out an algorithm for a routine job, it can be automated
Economically AND most well-paying, middle-class American jobs involve routine work. There are no American jobs- just jobs. Stolen from Mary Abraham, MCC Research & Assessment
Why This Is Important For the Country
We cannot win the numbers game BAs 5% of the Chinese population 25% of the American population the U. S. still graduates more college students than does China
We cannot win the numbers game When China is able to graduate 10% of its population, America must graduate 40% in order to remain even. This, of course, does not include India or any other rapidly developing nation. .
Who speaks more languages?
Hindi, Urdu, English
Global apathy Only 14 percent believe speaking another language is a necessary skill.
Global apathy nearly two-thirds of Americans aged 18 to 24 still cannot find Iraq on a map
Global apathy Thirty-three percent of Americans couldn't pinpoint Louisiana on a map. Only 50% could locate the state of New York on a map. Fewer than three in 10 think it important to know the locations of countries in the news
Global Apathy Nearly three-quarters incorrectly named English as the most widely spoken native language.
Global Apathy Forty-seven percent could not find the Indian subcontinent on a map of Asia. Seventy-five percent were unable to locate Israel on a map of the Middle East.
Global Apathy On the positive side, seven in 10 young Americans correctly located China on a map BUT, Forty-five percent said China's population is only twice that of the United States. It's actually four times larger than the U. S. population.
We must win the quality game Education must prepare students at a high level in more areas AND in a way that makes them more creative thinkers Comfort with abstraction and ideas is key The Current Education System is built for another era Also stolen from Mary Abraham
Why This Is Important For the Community Colleges
HLC Defines Diversity as Global Criteria Two: Preparing for the future: “the organization’s planning documents demonstrate that attention is being paid to emerging factors such as technology, demographic shifts, and globalization” (3. 1 -3).
HLC Defines Diversity as Global The Handbook of Accreditation also calls for colleges to be actively aware of the global environment students will be entering (3. 1 -3), for students to be prepared to live and work in a global society (3. 1 -5), and for global to be part of a general definition of diversity (3. 22).
Why This Is Important (most importantly, ) For Our Students
Which Jobs are going away? As best phrased by one faculty member, “aren’t the jobs being off-shored the ones we’re training our students for? If students must have a four-year degree in order to compete in the job market, how does this affect our mission? ” These are the questions we must answer and answer quickly
How fast will they need to adapt? “Employers are seeking graduates prepared for a 21 st century global economy, yet too many colleges and universities are still operating in a 20 th century mode. ”
Why Community Colleges Can Really Fix this Problem Responsive Adaptive Student centered
