Why the UK • • • Opportunities for unskilled workers Free Health Care and Education Benefits Relatively low cost of living Universality of English No visa requirements
Birmingham ? ? • • • Transport links within the UK and Europe Easy access to agricultural work Easy access to Employment Agencies Cheaper housing and cost of living Family and community connections Established community exists
Getting Here • Mostly men come on their own first • Later ask family to join them • May take a loan to get here and have to repay through work or selling up at home • May know someone who offers to help them • May come as part of a group
First steps • • Need a National Insurance Number Need an address Need to find work May need help
Getting National Insurance Apply for a N. I. Number appointment Bring documents Have an interview N. I. no longer does group interviews Have to state what they are doing to need a N. I. N. (Have a job? , Are working as self Employed? ) • Or get someone to go with them • • •
Prove it • They will be asked to provide proof of what they are stating, their address in the UK, and proof of identity • Once they have their N. I. N. they can then apply for a job or go to an agency or register as self Employed (HMRC telephone and online)
Self Employment Set up as a sole trader State your occupation/business Register for a tax code on Govt. Gateway Produce an invoice template, business card and state how you are going to promote your services/business • Produce a Tax return (online) showing an amount under taxable income (£ 11, 500) • •
I need help!! • There is always someone who can help you…. . • ………. for a price. • Some times your friendly local employment agency will do this for you and find you a house and job. • Sometimes “uncle” will help you to rent and produce invoices • Someone has to open a bank account
Now what? • Children are really useful to get on the benefits track • Child benefit is always the first benefit to be applied for • DWP will require the Birth cert/ passport, proof of address and N. I. N • Frequently check school rolls as well or ask for proof the children are here
Housing benefit • Housing benefit is paid to the claimant or the landlord. • You need the ID of yourself and your dependants • Proof of tenancy • Proof of income (see HMRC registration) • Paid into Bank Account
Council tax benefit • Applied for at the same time as Housing benefit with the same documents • The landlord registers you as liable for Council Tax
Right to Reside • The first thing you will be asked is your Immigration status • You must state you are exercising your right under Treaty as a EU citizen • You are resident three months after arriving • You can also apply for a residency card from the home office
Habitual Residence • Not compulsory for EU citizens if they have established a right to reside • Still sent to People applying for types of benefit
Child Benefit • Child Benefit is a tax-free benefit paid to most people with children. You do not need to have paid any national insurance contributions. • You need to live in the UK for three months before you can claim child benefit.
