4 Square Rules LUNCH AND CLASSROOM RECESS EXTENDED CARE P. E. CLASS
Saint Theresa Culture n n n At Saint Theresa we are trying to create our own “culture” during recess, Physical Education class and after school sports. We define culture as “the way we do things here” We are working to build a “culture” that Honors the Game. Honoring the game gets to the roots of positive play. Let’s see what ROOTS stand for. . .
HONORING THE GAME n n R: RULES – Refuse to bend the rules even to win O: OPPONENTS – A worthy opponent is a gift that brings out our best. It is not much fun to beat a much weaker opponent. n O: OFFICIALS – Respect the officials, teachers and playground supervisors even when you disagree n n T: TEAMMATES – Never do anything on or off the field that would embarrass your teammates. S: SELF – live up to your own standards. Even if others bend the rules, you choose not to.
Please—don’t kick playground balls The ball is over the fence!!!! n n Oh No!!! That ball is dinner! n Red bouncy balls may never be kicked at Saint Theresa unless you are in a Kickball game on the diamonds The “Reason for this Rule is that our fences are very low. You can see what happened when a ball was kicked over the fence.
OOPS!!!! If your ball does go over the fence, let the recess supervisor know so that she can go and get the ball.
Four Square Rules n There are many ways to play 4 -square. You may have some favorite ways that you play at home, at a camp or at your friend’s house. n At Saint Theresa we play by the following rules. If we all play by the same rules we avoid arguments.
Four Square Rules n You must agree to play by the Saint Theresa rules if you want to play. n This way every knows the same rules including your teacher and playground supervisors.
Object of the game n The object of the game is to become the server. The server is in Square #4. When you are out, you go back to Square #1. 1 4 2 3
Who is the server in this picture?
DID YOU PICK SHANNON IN SQUARE #4
A Good Idea n n Everyone likes to play. If there are more than 7 people who want to play 4 square. . . Start another square of 4 people. Four people waiting in line is too many!!!!
A Good Idea n n This way everyone gets to play and no one has to wait in line very long. Children are more willing to admit they are out if they don’t have to wait in line a long time. Square 1 Square 2 NO ONE IS WAITING IN LINE!
If You Need More Equipment: Ask your teacher to e-mail Coach Kaye with what you would like to have in the recess cart.
Serving the Ball n n A serve begins the game. You must say service before you drop the ball. This way the other children know the game is starting. Fingers point down on the serve. No Chicken feet, spinning, baby drops or snake eyes on the serve. (We will talk about what these are in the next slides. ) Click on Picture
n NO SPINNING ON THE SERVER HAS EARNED THE ADVANTAGE OF GETTING TO HIT THE BALL FIRST. n n SPINNING THE BALL GIVES THE SERVER AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. (#7 -The reason for this rule) AFTER THE SERVE, THE SERVER MAY SERVE THE BALL. Click on Picture
n NO CHICKEN FEET ON THE Chicken feet is when the ball SERVE lands on another players feet. n CHICKEN FEET GIVES THE SERVER AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. (#7 -The reason for this rule) n AFTER THE SERVE, THE SERVER MAY DO CHICKEN FEET. Click on Picture
NO SNAKE EYES ON THE SERVE n SNAKE EYES ARE WHEN THE SERVE LOOKS ONE DIRECTION AND SERVES TOWARD A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. n SPINNING THE BALL GIVES THE SERVER AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. (#7 -The reason for this rule) n AFTER THE SERVE, THE SERVER MAY DO SNAKE EYES. Click on Picture
NO BABY DROPS ON THE SERVE n BABY DROPS are when the balls is dropped just over the line. n SPINNING THE BALL GIVES THE SERVER AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. (#7 -The reason for this rule) n AFTER THE SERVE, THE SERVER MAY DO BABY DROPS. Click on Picture
AFTER THE SERVE, ANY PLAYER MAY: DO CHICKEN FEET
AFTER THE SERVE, ANY PLAYER MAY: SPIN THE BALL
AFTER THE SERVE, ANY PLAYER MAY: DO SNAKE EYES
AFTER THE SERVE, ANY PLAYER MAY: DO A BABY DROP
A player is OUT, when. . . a player holds the ball. n a player does bubbles or hits the ball two times n the ball bounces in a players square two times. n A ball bounces in a players square and it is not returned. n A player hits the ball before it bounces n
A player is OUT when: n the ball is hit with one hand. § The ball hits the line.
A player is OUT when: n He does a cherry bomb. Cherry bombs and hit very hard and usually go over the players heads.
Honoring the Game n If you make a mistake and are out, it is your job to use your LEADERSHIP and COOPERATION skills and return to Square 1. n If you do not take yourself out of the game, the other player’s must say that you are out. Practice using a nice voice to do this.
Honoring the Game n Everyone gets out sometimes. When you COOPERATE and go out nicely even when you don’t FEEL like it, others enjoy playing games with you. If you always have to be told when you are out or you make a fuss when you are out, the game is not fun. n Let your teachers or playground supervisor know if someone continually has to be reminded when they are out.
2 Square If only two people want to play, you can play two square. n The rules are the same, but you only use two squares. n
HAVE FUN. . . PLAYING FOUR SQUARE
