“All” are “Temples” Continue series: “Daily Life in the Spirit” Looking at the Old Testament: The Presence of God The Spirit and Gifting OT Promises and NT Fulfillment

1. The Presence of God From the very beginning, part of human experience God fellowshipped with Adam & Eve (Gen 3: 8 -10) Sin led to banishment from the Garden (Gen 3: 23) God initiated a plan to restore relationship – Abraham Reiterated to Jacob, called “Israel” (Gen 28: 13 -15) God said “I will be with you” (Gen 28: 15)

1. The Presence of God. . . God’s presence was a major issue. His blessing and protection gave them “rest” (Ex. 33: 14) His presence was their confidence in battle (Dt. 20: 1) He was their comfort in trials of life (Isa 25: 4, 43: 2) Three things to note: 1. God’s presence & blessing were conditional (Lev 26: 14) § E. g. “Golden Calf” – God wanted to remove his presence (33: 3) § Moses Pleaded with the Lord and He relented (Ex 33: 14 -16)

1. The Presence of God. . . 2. God’s presence not accessible everywhere (Dt 12: 11 -14) § Exodus – Pillar of Fore/Cloud; Tabernacle § Time of Solomon (940 BC) – Temple (1 Ki. 8) 3. Not everyone had the Spirit in them § The story of Moses and the 70 Elders (Num. 11: 14 -17) § He was given to specific people for a specific purpose § Not generally poured out on all Israelites.

The Presence of God … When they entered the Promised Land: God’s presence would be where he chose (Deut 12: 11 -14) People could not worship anywhere they chose Temple built in the time of Solomon (940 AD) God’s presence came to dwell in it (1 Kings 8) God’s presence was not accessible everywhere

1. The Presence of God … Not everyone had the Spirit of God in them. Moses was anointed and filled with the Spirit (Num 11: 17) 70 Elders were also given the Spirit. God’s Spirit was not generally poured out on all.

The Spirit & Gifting in the OT The Spirit equipped people for service: Moses and 70 Elders gifted as leaders and judges For Tabernacle: God gifted 2 men as craftsmen (Ex 35: 30 f) Desire to see God’s Spirit poured out on all. Two of the 70 Elders: Eldad and Medad (Num 11: 29) Moses: “wish Spirit on all the Lord’s people” (Num 11: 29) Desire / expectation throughout the prophets (Zec 2: 10 -11)

3. OT Promises and NT Fulfillment At Pentecost, Peter quotes from Joel 2: 28 -32 Fulfillment of general prophetic promise (Ezek 36: 24 f) Key word in OT expectation – “All” (Jer 31: 3334) God’s presence with his people directly (Ezek 37: 2628) The Gentile nations would also be included E. g. Psalm 86: 9; Isaiah 49: 6

3. OT Promises and NT Fulfillment. . . Through the Holy Spirit God dwells with us. The limited giving of the Spirit in OT no longer applies His Spirit is not taken away from us: David’s prayer of confession (Psalm 51, esp v 11) Jesus promised to be with us “always” (Matt 28: 20) Nothing can separate us from the love of God (Rom 8: 39) Our sinfulness is covered. (1 John 2: 1 -2)

Living it. . . God is with us He is the mark of ownership and guarantee (Eph 1: 13 -14) We “all” have been baptized, “all” given the Spirit to drink (1 Cor 12: 13) The OT picture replaced by NT reality. We each have full access to life in the Spirit.
