Promotions for Society Year SY 2006 • 26 to 29 Sep. 05: Provided brochures and other advertising material at the First Helicopter Safety Symposium in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Alex Richman represented our Canadian Chapter. He said all of the brochures disappeared quite quickly. • 17 Nov. 06: Supported the Safety in Health Care “Governance & Patient safety: How to make health care a high reliability service” seminar in Vancouver, Canada. The ECC provided $500 to support this seminar. It was a success. The contribution helped to build support within Canada for System Safety activities. • 24 to 26 Apr. 06: ECC funded Gerry Einarsson to attend the Canadian Aviation Safety Symposium (CASS) in Halifax, Canada to promote the System Safety Society. Gerry said the brochures and advertising material was well received. • Participated with other Associations and Societies: Society of Reliability of Engineers (SRE), IEEE. Computer Human Interface & Ergo Safety. Also attempted to build bridges with other Groups: Professional Engineers, Project Management Institute, etc. • JSS: Encouraged Canadians to submit articles for Journal of System Safety. The articles / papers by Doug Mein and Bryce Fisher were sent to Niles. • ISSC 24: Gerry Einarsson and Heather Henderson served on the Albuquerque Conference organizing committee as Conference Vice Chair and Public Relations / Promotions Chair. ISSC 25: Bob Fletcher is serving as International Chair on the ISSC 25 organizing committee. ISSC 26: Supported discussions to try to assess the resources available to potentially host the ISSC 26 in Western Canada. • • 7

Chapter Goals for Society Year SY 2007 • To maintain and grow the local chapter out of Ottawa • To start at least one other chapter in Canada within 2 years • To support the ISSC 25 • To support ISSC 26 in 2008 (possibly hosted in Vancouver) August 2006 8

Concerns • The people who have been keeping the chapter alive include several who have been volunteering their time for several years now and they are getting tired. It is difficult to find new people who have the same level of commitment. • The resources in Canada to host the Vancouver conference are not very extensive. It is difficult to measure the risk associated with hosting this conference • Due to the amount of work involved with organizing and sustaining a chapter, the few number of participants at each location, and the great distances across Canada; we have been exploring the possibility of having one chapter to unite the whole country with the possibility of starting new chapters as the numbers in the various locations increase. It is uncertain how to best encourage continued growth throughout Canada and how to sustain the satellite groups which connect to the Ottawa based chapter. • We will need to find people to fill the appointed positions (Programme Chair, Membership Chair, Promotions Chair) starting in September 2006.
