RAPIER Overhead Range 41
Rapier Overhead Range Rapier GX - based on SF 6 technology • GX-M (manual, hook-stick operation) • GX-RC (local/ remote control via Gemini-RTU) • GX-S or Sectionaliser (under development) 42
Rapier GX Load Break Switch Features • Ratings up to 38 k. V • SF 6 gas utilised as both arc quenching and insulating medium • Equipped with 3 current transformers and 6 VCT’s in the bushings • Stainless Steel enclosure sealed for life • Motor actuator for DA • Overpressure membrane for internal arc protection 43
Rapier GX Load Break Switch Features (contd) • Options available include: - Low gas pressure lockout device - Gas pressure switch - 3 additional CT’s for SEF - Manual locking device - Built-in VT for control cabinet supply • GX LBS integrated with Gemini-RTU controller (described later) 44
Rapier GX Load Break Switch - Benefits • • • 45 Field proven LBS performance Low capital and lifetime costs Virtually maintenance free Designed for maximum operator safety Capable of live line installation Integrated solution for distribution automation
Rapier Overhead Range Rapier RX - based on air break technology • RX-M (manual down pole or hook-stick operation) • RX-RC (local/ remote control via Gemini-RTU) • RX-FS or Fuse Switch 46
Problems Associated with Older Air Break Designs • Mechanisms would seize up over time due to stiff bearings and corroded main contacts • Load Break Heads seized up due to complex design • Braided flexes and joints suffered corrosion • Significant maintenance over the switches’ lifecycle 47
New Features in RX Design • Low friction, corrosion resistant bearing leading to low maintenance and improved reliability • Laminated flexes with no corrosive effects. (Tested for 2, 000 operations before single lamination broke) • New simpler design of Arc Chute device for rapid arc extinction when load breaking • New tungsten tipped contacts so that Fault Make Heads can be fitted as an option • All key components now stainless steel for corrosion resistance 48
New Rapier RX Switch Arc Chute Laminated Flexes Universal Main Contacts Fault Make Head Pin Bearing 49
New RX switch design 50
Double Acting Spring Mechanism (DASM) Vertical drive rod De-latching arms Closed or hook ends 51 Operating arm Overtravel stops
Modular Design Approach Switches can be specified with: • • FMH, LBH or EB Current ratings of 400, 630 or 800 A Short circuit ratings up to 25 k. A for 3 seconds Choice of insulators - traditional ceramic or polymeric options such as EPDM and Silicone Rubber • Manual or motorised mechanism • Remotely controlled with RTU and integral motorised actuator 52
Patented Fault Passage Indicator FPI 53
Why consider an RX switch as part of your DA? • Much improved design so that the RX can be relied upon to be remotely controlled • Significant price differential with SF 6 enclosed switches e. g. £ 1, 000 - £ 1, 500 • No monitoring of SF 6 gas pressure • RX switch considered as a Point of Isolation • Environmentally friendly “AIR BREAK TECHNOLOGY” 54
