Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F. BOUVET 3 rd POCPA Workshop, 21 -23 May 2012, DESY Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Our main objectives for 2012 - 2014 • SOLEIL power supplies and pulsed systems: – – – • Collaborations in which SOLEIL is engaged • • • Improvement of the equipment reliability Enhancement of the equipment availability Improvement of the performances of SOLEIL New power supply needs linked to the Storage Ring modification New operating modes Realisation of the compact X-ray source THOM-X Know-how licence contract in the Pulsed Magnet Systems field with SIGMAPHI Collaboration SOLEIL / MAX-4 Collaboration with the international synchrotron light source SESAME (Jordan) Participation in new projects LUNEX-5 project X-ray source of 5 th generation Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Equipement reliability • 3 Maximize the reliability of our equipement: – Preventive maintenance (Tightening of power connexions (every year), replacement of fans, electrolytic capacitors, etc…) – Systematic analysis of breakdowns – Corrective maintenance – Surveillance of equipment performances (PS current ripple, tracking error between Booster PS currents, current shape & jitter of pulsed systems, periodic verification of the value of the stored beam residual bump induced by the pulsed magnets at SR injection, …) % user beam unavailability vs scheduled beam time Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Equipement availability • Maximize the availibility of our equipement Spares – Enhancement of the user beam availability constitutes a major target of the SOLEIL Sources and Accelerator Division for the coming years – Reasonable redundancy in major equipment is one of the keys to achieve the goal – Strategy originally set up for spare parts: purchase complete equipment for low power devices (like quadrupole or corrector power supplies) only spare parts for the main components and/or subsystems (IGBT assembly, …) in the bigger systems (like sextupole or dipole PS) Of course repairing such systems can take a long time depending on the failure complexity: SOLEIL experienced many hours of beam interruption in October 2008 (48 hours) or November 2009 (24 hours) during repairs of the Storage Ring dipole PS Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Equipement availability • • – – – To prevent this, it has been decided to build in-house a new power supply for the Storage Ring dipole magnets In the event of a breakdown, the idea is to switch the dipole magnet chain from the power supply which is out of order to the spare power supply This operation will take less than 15 minutes, thus avoiding long beam interruptions Decision to build this PS in-house motivated by 3 considerations: Reduced cost (no manpower-related costs) Maintenance/development of the group member skills Construction of a more reliable PS as compared to the existing unit which presents some design faults PS specifications: 580 A / 610 V Load: 1. 05Ω ; 3. 4 H Current resolution and stability (over 24 hours) respectively 5 ppm and 10 ppm of the nominal current Efficiency: Above 95% at nominal power Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Equipement availability • Spare dipole power supply Changeover switch Buck converter Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Equipement availability • Spare dipole power supply Topology based on 2 interleaved step-down converters switching @ 10 k. Hz Digital regulation using a PSI digital control unit Control module The spare dipole PS will be in operation on the machine in September Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Equipement availability Other developments: • Mid-2012 – Mid-2013: In-house construction of a spare power supply (~ 50 k. W) for • the 10 sextupole power supplies of the Storage Ring 2013 – 2014: We plan to build a spare unit for some insertion device power supplies (~ 70 k. W) For PS tests & repairs: • Since 2010: Realisation of several test benches • Purchase of a 70 k. W resistive test load (variable R) Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
New power supply needs New « long » beamlines • A 2, 200 m 2 extension to the SOLEIL experimental hall is currently under construction to accomodate 2 long (160 m & 200 m) beamlines dedicated to state of the art hard X-ray nano-imaging techniques. • The photon sources of these 2 new beamlines are 2 invacuum undulators which have been installed in the same long straight section of the Storage Ring. The optics of this section has been changed with the introduction of new magnets. Needed PS for these magnets: - 2 PS 275 A / 17 V ± 5 ppm + 3 PS 275 A / 27 V ± 5 ppm + 4 PS 10 A / 5 V ± 50 ppm (+ spares) built inhouse in 2011 - 3 power supplies 150 A/50 V ± 5 ppm Will be built in-house in 2013 Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
New power supply needs 10 Femto-second e- beam Slicing project (2012 -2013) • Goal: Provide 100 fs long pulses of soft and hard X-rays with a reasonable flux and a 1 -10 k. Hz repetition rate • Interaction inside a wiggler of a laser beam ultra-short pulse with an e- bunch energy modulation of the electrons within a short section of that bunch (slice). Using non-zero dispersion sections, this slice gives 2 transversely separated satellites which will radiate in an undulator located downstream. • 4 power supplies will be needed + 1 spare We are waiting for specifications… Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
Improvement of SOLEIL performances Reduction of the stored beam residual bump @ Storage Ring injection • Results in 2010 (Target = 10% beam size): Plane H V Target ~ 30 µm rms ~ 2 µm rms Thin septum ~0 ~0 Thick septum 10 µm pk (3%) 8 µm pk (40%) 4 Kickers 70 µm rms (20%) 40 µm rms (200%) Comparison with results in 2007 Thick septum residual bump Gain = a factor of 80 in H-plane bump ~10 μm pk V-plane bump ~8 μm pk Factor 2 to 3 gain These results are excellent but the target is not completely met Active correction in V plane under study Study of injection scheme on axis by a pulsed multipole magnet New project part of the collaboration with MAX-4 Power Supply activities at SOLEIL F Bouvet – POCPA 3
New operating modes • Low-alpha operating mode Production of short bunches. Bunch length = 4. 8 ps For THz and X-ray short buch science Implementation of a new optics on the machine requiring the power supply polarity reversal of 24 quadrupoles and 2 sextupole chains Purpose: Satisfy simultaneously two user communities for time resolved experiments Installation of the polarity inverters (like in single bunch operation) & high flux/brilliance experiments (like in multibunch operation) • Pseudo-Single Bunch mode A fast kicker system (pulses of ~1 ns) operating at a high repetition rate (1 k. Hz-1 MHz) = special hybrid mode in which the isolated is required to kick the isolated bunch on a different vertical closed orbit 5 -10 m. A bunch is orbiting on different closed orbit.
