RAIN n n . 1. INTRODUCTION 2. WATER CYCLE 3. TYPES OF RAIN 4. RAIN HARVEST
Water is an invaluable and most important natural resource. The main sources of water are tanks, ponds, open wells, bore wells, streams, rivers etc From where do these water bodies get the water? Its from the process called “WATER CYCLE. ” which happens in nature. What is water cycle? The water on surface of the earth vapourises and rises up in the atmosphere. There it condenses to form rain, snow, hilstrom and falls back to earths surface. This cyclic process is called “WATER CYCLE”. Only 0. 005% of total quantity of water on earth circulates
n n n 1 Evaporation of water from the surface of ocean and other water bodies to the atmosphere. 2 Leaves allow water vapours to enter the atmosphere through the process of transpiration. 3 Water vapour in the atmosphere moves horizontally from one place to another. 4 Water vapour in the atmosphere, condenses and returns to the earth in the form of rain, snow, hail storm etc, . This condensation is due to the low temperature at high altitudes. 5 A part of the rain water flows down to the lower regions and finally reaches the ocean.
CONVECTIONAL RAIN Convectional rain occurs in the equatorial regions throughout the year. When the earth is heated, the air becomes light and rises. The moisture laden air is very light & it rises quickly. The air cools rapidly & condensation takes place. It is mostly occurs in afternoon.
OROGRAPHIC RAIN n When the moisture laden air from the sea is obstructed by mountain barriers, it is forced to ascend. As it moves up, it expands, cools & condensation takes place. There is heavy rain on the wind ward side. But on the leeward side there is very little rain. It is called the rain shadow area. Orographic rain is formed mostly in the
CYCLONIC RAIN n Cyclonic rain occurs when the cold polar air meets the warm westerlies which also carry moisture. The warm air rises over the cold air. As it rises, it cools, condensation takes place. The rain fall is not heavy. The temperature cyclones gives rain to the belt of the westerlies.
RAIN HARVESTING n Rain water harvesting is the need of the day. This has to be done at the house level & community level. This is an easy & non cost effective procedure.
