36 Intelligent Browser Referencing When a user requests a page, the browser checks each object to see if it appears in cache. If it does, the browser makes a request of the server to check whether the content is still valid. This reduces the amount of data transferred, however, each object still requires a connection to validate it, and therefore you pay the latency penalty for each freshness check. F 5 allows the web accelerator to control the browser cache using etags and eliminates the freshness check altogether. When you eliminate the freshness check with F 5’s Web Accelerator, you don’t pay the latency penalty, and your application performs better.
