International Agreement on Engineering Education Accreditation Washington Accord (1989~ ) A n international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs. When WA considers an accreditation system is equivalent, it asks… • Is the system similar to the systems of the signatories? • Is there a clearly defined and published scope of activity for the accreditation agency? • Does the accreditation agency demonstrate the use of appropriate and fair procedures in decision making? • Does the accreditation agency have the capacity to conduct accreditation activities on an ongoing basis? • Does the operating documentation focus attention on the fundamental criteria for accreditation? • Is the outcome standard, as evaluated by existing signatories during live observation and interaction, consistent with that represented by relevant Accord? 5 Copyright© 2009 Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan. When a WA signatory considers a program accredited, it mean the program meets the following requirements: • • In accord with WA’s Graduate Attributes; A suitable environment to deliver the program; Adequate leadership for the program; Suitably qualified teaching staff (faculty) in the program; • An engineering curriculum providing a broad basis for engineering practices; • Adequate human, physical and financial resources to support the program. 6 Copyright© 2009 Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan. Engineers Australia on dual degree: • Does not have dual degree program. • Have “undifferentiated” programs provided by institutions outside Australia, but the degree comes from the host Australian institution. • Of the 36 engineering schools, 9 offered undifferentiated programs offered through other WA signatories or provisional signatory – HK, Singapore and Malaysia • Of the 330 engineering programs, about 20 undifferentiated programs have been accredited. 8 Copyright© 2009 Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan. Engineers New Zealand on dual degree: • Does not have dual degree program – insists that only one degree-granting institution per program • One NZ educational provider offers Australian certificate with accreditation performed by both IPENZ and EA. 9 Copyright© 2009 Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan. Letter from Canada (Oct. 24, 2007) • The Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) has recommended to their legal licensing authority that graduates of programs accredited by IEET be granted the same recognition, rights and privileges as those granted to graduates of programs accredited by CEAB. 11 Copyright© 2009 Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan.
