היסטוריה מקורותיו של משחק השחמט לוטים בערפל ושנויים במחלוקת, והמצאתו יוחסה לאימפריות שונות של העולם העתיק בסין, בהודו, מצרים או פרס. ככל הנראה, מוצאו של המשחק ממשחק הלוח ההודי צ'טורנגה, שנדד וזכה לווריאציות שונות במזרח כמו שיאנג-צ'י בסין, שוגי ביפן, ג'נגי בקוריאה ומקרוק בתאילנד ובקמבודיה. טענות שונות כאילו שורשו של המשחק עתיק בהרבה שגויות ככל הנראה. התפשטותו המהירה החלה מן המאה השביעית, ללא איזכורים כלשהם בספרות לפני כן, המעידים על כך שהומצא קרוב לתקופה זו. בימי הביניים, הגיע המשחק מפרס לאירופה )בצורת המשחק שאתראנג'(. המשחק כפי שאנחנו מכירים אותו כיום הוא גרסה מהמאה ה 61וככל הנראה מוצאו מאיטליה.

רבי יהודה הלוי בספר הכוזרי מזכיר את המשחק: "ועל כן לא ייתכן שינצח החלש את החזק בשחוק האשקוקי הנקראת שטרנג' בערבי, ולא יאמר 'הצלחה' ו'רע מזל ארדשיר' במלחמת האשקוקי, כאשר יאמר במלחמת שני מלכים נלחמים, כי סיבות הארדשיר ומלחמת השטרנג' נמצאות כולן, וינצח החכם בהנהגתו תמיד, ולא יירא סיבה טבעית שצריך להתנות בה ולא סיבה מקרית, אלא בעת נכרי מחמת התעלמות: וההתעלמות נכנס בסכלות כאשר אמרנו. הפרשן והמשורר ר אברהם אבן עזרא היה שחקן שחמט מצטיין ומאהבתו את המשחק כתב עליו שירים ואף שיר-חידה: "אשורר שיר ומלחמה ערוכה קדומה מן ימי קדם נסוכה ערוכה מתי שכל ובינה קבועה עלי טורים בשמונה. ועל כל טור וטור בהם חקוקות עלי לוחות, שמונה מחלקות והטורים מרובעים רצופים ושתי מחנות עומדים צפופים. כושים בגדוד פשטו ידיהם, אדומים יצאו בקרב אחריהם. והרוגלים יבואו בתחילה, למלחמה נוכח המסילה. ועתים יגברו כושים עליהם, וינוסו אדומים מפניהם. ועתים כי אדום יגבר לכושים, ומלכם בקרב הם נחלשים. ארץ בלי אדמה, מלכיה ושריה הולכים בלי נשמה. אם המלך שממה לא תחיה כל נשמה".

יהודים נחשבו למצטיינים במשחק השחמט כבר שנים רבות ושחמטאים יהודים רבים הפכו לרבי אמנים )הדרגה העליונה בשחמט(. ביניהם ניתן לציין את אלופי העולם וילהלם שטייניץ, עמנואל לאסקר, מיכאל בוטביניק, מיכאיל טל וגם יהודים למחצה )הורה אחד יהודי( כמו בובי פישר, בוריס ספסקי וגארי קספרוב. שחמטאים יהודים בולטים אחרים הם מיגל ניידורף, שהיה אלוף ארגנטינה שנים רבות, שמואל רשבסקי, יהודי שומר מצוות ורב אמן אמריקאי חזק, אהרן נימצוביץ', מגדולי התאורטיקנים בשחמט, ריצ'רד רטי, דוד ברונשטיין, עקיבא רובינשטיין ורבים אחרים. מוצאה של השחקנית הטובה ביותר מאז ומעולם, יהודית פולגר, ניכר משמה.

Russian Chess pieces

Book of Games Libro de ajedrez, dados y tablas (The Book of chess , dice and tables") was commissioned by Alfonso X, king of León and Castile, during the 13 th century between 1251 and 1283 AD. It consists of 98 pages, with 150 color illustrations. The games covered include chess (including the earliest known European chess problems), dice, and tables (the family of games that includes backgammon). It contains the earliest known description of some of these games, including many games imported from the Arab kingdoms. It is one of the most important documents for researching the history of board games. The only known original is held in the library of the monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial near Madrid in Spain.

The painting on which this stamp is based comes from the Libro del Acedrex from the 13 th century, a book on chess and games, composed by King Alfonso X.
