Russian composers In the 18 th century Russian music was greatly influenced by Italian opera and classical music thanks to invitations to Italian musicians by the Russian court. As a result some Russian composers went to Italy to study. Russia is comprised of many different ethnic cultures and consequently has a wide variety of folk music. Glinka was the first great composer to exploit traditional music and this trend was further developed by the 'Mighty Five'.

The Mighty Fife A group of five Russian composers: Borodin, César Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky. Korsakov and their leader Mily Balakirev. Their principal aim was to compose classical music based on Russian national traditions. See below for profiles of the individual members.

Mikhail Glinka is the ingenious Russian composer. Like Pushkin in poetry, it was the founder of Russian classical music - opera and symphonic. Sources of music of Glinka withdraw in Russian national creativity. The love for the country, to its people, to Russian nature gets its best products. Mikhail Glinka was born in the village of Novospasskoye, not far from the Desna River in the Smolensk Guberniya of the Russian Empire. "Music is my soul, " he has told in 8 years.

Alexander Dargomyzhsky is the younger contemporary and Glinka's follower. It has entered into history of Russian music as "the great teacher of musical truth", the courageous innovator. In the creativity it was close to democratic writers and artists of Russia. Not casually the best creations of Dargomyzhsky are written on Pushkin and Lermontov's words.

The known products • «Esmeralda» . An opera in four actions on own libretto under Victor Hugo novel "Notre-Dame". It is written in 1838 -1841. • «Mermaid» . Opera in four actions on own libretto under the unfinished play of Pushkin with the same name. It is written in 1848 -1855. • «The stone visitor» . Opera in three actions on the text with the same name «Small tragedy» Pushkin. It is written in 1866 -1869. • "Baba-yaga". It is ended in 1862, for the first time it is executed in 1870. • Songs and romances for two voices and a piano on verses of Russian and foreign poets.

Modest Mussorgsky Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was a Russian composer, one of the group known as 'The Five'. He was an innovator of Russian music in the romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music. Many of his works were inspired by Russian history, Russian folklore, and other nationalist themes. For many years Mussorgsky's works were mainly known in versions revised or completed by other composers.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. His wideranging output includes symphonies, operas, ballets, instrumental, chamber music and songs. He wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the classical repertoire, including the ballets «Swan Lake» , «The Sleeping Beauty» and «The Nutcracker» , the 1812 «Overture» , his First Piano Concerto, his last three numbered symphonies, and the opera «Eugene Onegin» .
