Book of hours The book of hours is the most common type of surviving medieval illuminated manuscript. Like every manuscript, each manuscript book of hours is unique in one way or another, but most contain a similar collection of texts, prayers and psalms, often with appropriate decorations, for Christian devotion. Illumination or decoration is minimal in many examples, often restricted to decorated capital letters at the start of psalms and other prayers, but books made for wealthy patrons may be extremely lavish, with full-page miniatures.
Sforza Hours The Sforza Hours is one of the most beautifully decorated Renaissance books of hours in the Library's collection. The superb illuminations by the Italian miniaturist Giovan Pietro Birago and the Flemish illuminator Gerard Horenbout survive with the original brilliance they must have had at the time of their creation over four centuries ago.
Henry VIII's Psalter King David playing his harp is a common illustration seen in Jewish manuscripts. Here, though, there is another dimension to the regal musician: it is also a sumptuous portrait of Henry VIII of England, the owner of this (Christian) Psalter. Ramayana The story of Rama is one of the oldest Indian stories and the subject of one of the great Sanskrit epics of Hinduism, the 'Ramayana', attributed to the poet Valmiki. Ramayana, Battle between the armies of Rama and the King of Lanka. Udaipur, 1649 -53
The Ramayana is one of the two ancient Sanskrit epics from India. It tells the story of the righteous prince Rama and his rescue of his wife Sita after her abduction by the demon king Ravana. The present illustrated manuscript is laid out on the grandest scale with over 400 paintings originally. It was commissioned by Maharana Jagat Singh (1628 -1652), the ruler of Mewar, now part of Rajasthan in western India. The copying of the text was begun in 1649 by Mahatma Hirananda in Jagat Singh's court studio at Udaipur, and finished in the first year of the reign of his successor Maharana Raj Singh (1652 -1680).
Ramayana - detail
This book is the culmination of Sahib Din's work and the high point of seventeenth-century Rajput book illustration. Continuity is maintained over the course of the large sequence of paintings by having Rama and his allies always on the left and Lanka and Ravana always on the right. This sequence is only reversed when the battle is won and the exiles set off back to Ayodhya. Throughout the book there is a relentless build up of tension as battle succeeds battle and stratagem succeeds stratagem, culminating in the majestic fight between Rama and Ravana in which each performs according to the dharma into which he has been born.
Wishing to see Sita again and be reconciled with her, Rama visited the hermitage of Valmiki. Sita prayed to the Earth Goddess to receive her if she had never thought of any man but Rama. The goddess herself rose up to receive her on a golden throne and they were both swallowed up by the earth again.
