Project 4 “University Campus”

The Polytechnical University is based on a compact park-like campus in the residential north-west district of St. Petersburg. A greater part of the campus is a large park with university buildings scattered around it. This project is for active, creative students, who want to explore the university.

1. The Main Building The complex of buildings of the St.-Petersburg Polytechnical institute was erected under the direction of the Special building commission created on February, 23rd, 1899. For building the remote site of Petersburg, near village Sosnovka has been chosen. Designing and building was conducted by an architectural workshop under the direction of E.F.Virriha. The project included a complex of the buildings forming independent campus similar that existed in Cambridge and Oxford. The complex structure included the main building, the chemical pavilion, two hostels and the mechanical case. The solemn bookmark of buildings has been carried out on June, 18th, 1900. Building was conducted with 1900 till 1905. Building of the main building has been finished in 1902.

1.Fundumental Labrary The Fundamental Library of Polytechnical University is one of the largest scientific and technological libraries in Russia and rates among the three best libraries of St.Petersburg. The number of readers who use it is in excess of 25,000. The library possesses collection of more than 2 600 000 of volumes. Fundamental Library is the first Russian library which has the Internet connection via high-speed optical communications. The Library information services are developed and supported by the Open Library Systems Center.

3. Sport Centre Sports and physical fitness is an excellent means of achieving an enduring balance between one's professional and personal life. For this reason our University has the Department of Physical Culture and Sports. All students wishing to learn anything from basketball to skiing are welcomed to the University Sport Centre. Sport Centre includes: stadium for 5,000 spectators gymnastics halls tennis courts swimming pool 2 football fields athletics sectors race-tracks volleyball and basketball sites Sport represents a lively section of the social life on University campus. Students and staff can have an active lifestyle with the Department of Physical Culture and Sports. The expert physical education staff organize group and individual exercise sessions, offer fitness programs and consultation. Students are offered the chance to learn or improve sporting skills. The swimming pool and gymnastics halls are centrally located in the Physical Culture Building.
