Nationalities and countries. (PYP) Min zi International culture club.

Where do you come from? • Remember we have learnt the phrase: • Where do you come from? • I come from China.

Nationality and country. • The word ‘country’ means where someone comes from. • The word ‘nationality’ is used as a noun to talk about the country which a person belongs to.

Where does he come from? • He comes from China • Or: • He is Chinese. • What is her nationality? (Not used as much as ‘Where do you come from’? ) • He is English.

A short geography lesson • Africa- People from Africa are called Africans. • The Americas- People from North America are called North americans. • From South America- South Americans. • Asia- Asians. • Australia- Australians. • Europe- Europeans.

Paul! • Where does Paul come from? • Paul comes from Britain. • He is British. • He is an Englishman.

Man or woman? • Sometimes people might say: • I am an Englishman • She is a Frenchwoman. • When they are talking about nationalities.

Expressions. • Sometimes we use expressions or particular words in English to react to a statement or to news : • For example if you said : ‘Paul is from England’. • You could use ‘That’ to make a number of expressions: • ‘ That is great’ • That is wonderful’ • ‘ That is cool’ • That is interesting’.

Activity. • Think of a country, if you know the name of the nationality in English, write the name down or tell the class. • Then try and find out what is the word is used to describe the person’s nationality.
