- It’s the 6 th biggest country in the world. - It’s an island, surrounded by water. - It’s the smallest continent in the world.
Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere. Because it is south of the equator, the seasons in Australia are the opposite of those in Europe: it’s winter in Australia when it’s summer in Europe.
The capital city is Canberra The biggest city is Sydney, where there is the famous Sydney Opera House.
• In 1770 Captain James Cook led a scientific voyager planted the British ensign on a continent that would soon provide a vast new colony: Australia. • It was just a little over 390 years that the Australian continent was discovered. Until the name “Australia” (meaning “South Land”) became generally accepted for the continent, it had been referred to as New Holland, New South Wales, or Botany Bay.
Native Australians. The Aborigines have lived in Australia for over 40, 000 years. Now they only represent 1% of the population. The total population of Australia is 22 million.
National Anthem, Flag and the Coat-of-Arms Australian national flag consists of 5 white stars of the Southern Cross and the white Commonwealth star (the large seven pointed star) on a blue background with a Union Jack. • Australian flora and fauna is reflected in the country’s coat-ofarms by the symbols of Australia’s endemic animals; kangaroo and emu. •
The currency is the Australian dollar.

I Love This Land Australia I love this Land Australia of gum and wattle tree This vast and sunlit Continent is home from home for me And though I come from a distant Land when I have had my day Than underneath Australian soil where better place to lay. I like Australian people if poor man make good they say The man he is a battler, good on him anyway, In Land of wedge tailed eagle there's room to spread one's wings And in the lucky country the battler is a king.
