Historical story “Taras Bulba” is the longest historical story of M. Gogol. The main characters are Zaporozhian Cossacks. The actions take place in Ukraine in first half of 17 th century. The main character is Cossacks colonel Taras Bulba.
The plot of story Two sons Andrii and Ostap returned home from a seminary in Kiev to their father Taras Bulba. It was the time of a war with Poland. Sons went to the Zaporozhian Sich to fight against enemies. Andrii was killed by Taras Bulba because he was betrayer. He helped Poland girl which he loved. Ostap was captured and Taras couldn’t save him. Bulba was captured too and when he was burning on campfire he thought not about him, about his friends Cossacks.
The main character is Taras Bulba. 1) He isn’t imagined character, he is a prototype of Ukrainian hetman Okhrim Makhuha. 2) His image based on the legend of Cossack captain Sava Chaly who was killed by his father for betraying the Ukraine.
Filming of “Taras Bulba” became very popular story that’s why were done a lot of films of this story. The most popular is filming with a play of Bogdan Stupka. Also were done films by French, Germany, Russian and another producers.
Interesting information Mykola Gogol and his story “Taras Bulba” became very popular, that’s why in 2008 were done stamps with their portraits to bicentenary of birth of M. Gogol.
