Lecture 7 Teaching aids (means of teaching)

Definition of “aids” Aids are resources and equipment that available to us in the classroom, as well as the resources we can bring into the classroom. They include cassette recorders, CD players, video recorders and overhead projectors, visual aids, realia and the teacher himself/ herself!

Means of teaching (teaching aid) is a complex of learning and technical things with the help of which activity of the teacher and activity of students on mastering the language is exercised. Means of teaching concern basic categories of a technique. They facilitate process of mastering language and make it more effective.

TMC (Teaching Methodological Complex) = УМК (учебный методический комплекс) Means of teaching make the maintenance of a typical educational complex – TMC, intended for work with a concrete contingent of students in the conditions of profound learning FL.

Student’s book (SB) includes following components: Content (CLIL) material. Terms and concepts of the subject. The lexical units are intended for productive and receptive mastering a language (dialogues are considered as communicative units); Grammatical material in modern SB is presented in the form of models of offers, speech samples and rules of the grammar usage. Majority of SBs use communicative approach to mastering grammar; Phonetic material. Sounds, rhymes, intonation considering difficulties of EL; Sociocultural material. Includes information about the country of a studied language in comparison with national features of language and culture. The material is presented by sociocultural units of language, texts of cross-cultural orientation.

Student’s book (SB) includes following components: Different types of text material; comments on the texts. Have lexical and grammatical character and is important when the comment is possibly brief and has practical significance for mastering a language; Different types of exercises. Are intended for fastening, activation of teaching material and organization of control over quality of mastering a language. Glossary. In SB structures are presented by lists of words in the form of the appendix to SB; Aply-graphic presentation in the form of reproductions, drawings, photo pictures.
