European Master Program Embedded Computing Systems www. emecs. eu Wolfgang Kunz General Coordinator Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering Technische Universität Kaiserslautern
European Master Embedded Computing Systems (EMECS) Erasmus Mundus Ø Study at European universities leading in the field Ø Get a Joint Master‘s Degree Ø Experience European culture in different countries Ø Stipends available slide 2
Embedded Systems • “Embedded System“: complex computer system specialized for certain applications in a particular technical environment – Telecommunication – Automotive Systems – Manufacturing • More than 90% of the processors sold on the global market are for embedded applications • Example: embedded systems in modern middle class car: – 70 processors – 10 million lines of software code – 40 % of the value slide 3
EMECS Study Areas Communication Systems Ambient Systems Assisted Living Automotive Systems Manufacturing Medical Engineering Embedded System/ Application Energy Control Agri-/Aquaculture General Purpose Processors Hardware Description Languages Application Specific Instruction-Set Processors Multiprocessor Systems Design Space Exploration Architectures/ System-on-Chip Hardware & Software Design System-on-Chip Network-on-Chip Real-Time System Software RT-Level Design Logic and Physical Design Synthesis and Test Verification Statistical Design Reliability slide 4
Synergies: Course Content Added Value • Huge and heterogenous teaching space • Collaboration of partners in joint projects (master’s thesis, student project) Embedded System/ Application Architectures/ System-on-Chip Hardware & Software Design • Partners are active in complementing „habitats“ of Embedded System education and research • Students benefit from being exposed to several such “habitats” „Habitat“: environment characterized by specific application domain (e. g. Telecom or Automotive), industrial partners with specific profiles, research specializations, specialized educational offers slide 5
Elements of Jointness slide 6
EMECS Program Structure Core Program • Partner universities have agreed on core teaching areas to be covered • Can be completed at each university within one year of study enables student mobility Elective Program • Partner universities have agreed on elective teaching areas • Reflects the profile and strength of each partner university Fellowships for distinguished external lecturers! slide 7
EMECS Student Mobility slide 8
Elements of Jointness Joint Educational Offers and Activities § Erasmus Mundus Distinguishes Lecture Series § Embedded System Day § EMECS-thon § EMECS Electronic Mentoring and Bonding Platform (acronym: Embed. In) § Joint Projects (between universities and industrial partners) slide 9
Student Excellence: EMECS Admission & Stipends Admission Requirements § B. Sc. degree (or equivalent) with strong grades § Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL) § GRE test (recommended) § Motivation letter § Two recommendation letters Stipends: consortium can provide scholarships for about 15 students per intake § € 1000 per month § € 16000 tuition coverage § € 4000 travel money slide 10
Joint Degree Program Experiences…. Joint Degree programs put extra challenge on international offices: § mandatory student mobility: - visa - accomodation - pre-arrival and pre-departure information § distributed student community: - build an identity within the student community: “EMECS family” § increased risk of academic and administrative problems - counseling slide 11
Joint Degree Experiences…. Different administrative cultures § EMECS puts significant stress on partner administrations § Students experience administrative problems § Processes for examination affairs and degree awarding differ Therefore: a joint degree can only be awarded if all required legal and administrative procedures have been completed in all partner universities! slide 12
slide 13
slide 14
Joint Degree Experiences…. Keep things simple and flexible § simple graduation rules: - every partner fully recognizes credit points awarded by the other partners according to their local regulations - student must have obtained ECTS credits ( 15 CP) from at least two partners - a master thesis (30 CP) must have been conducted fullfilling the regulations of one of the partner universities - a total of 120 CP must have been earned § Flexibility in individual study program - academic advisor of joint degree students must have high degree of freedom and the institutional rights to make decisions on the course content of an individual student slide 15
Conclusion Overall: a very positive experience § appr. 100 EMECS graduates so far § EMECS students clearly perform above average § Students were attracted from regions that were previously not strongly represented in partner universities: USA, Australia, other European countries, Russia, Brazil § EMECS has become a „light tower“ for other international programs at the partner universities slide 16
slide 17
Professional Perspectives Microelectronics Industry Software Industry Application Industries: Automotive, Telecom, Manufacturing § So. C Designer: concept engineers, hardware designers, verification and test engineers § Embedded software specialist § Methodology specialist § Application engineers § … slide 18
Joint Degree Truly integrated…. Formal integration § Jointly developed core programme § Agreement on elective programme § Use of ECTS system (as a joint reference) § Mutual recognition of credits earned within consortium § Joint supervision by two advisors, one from each institution involved § Provide a detailed list of admission requirements agreed by all partners § Joint Degree slide 19
