A CARNAL VIEW OF THE CHURCH Catholic Encyclopedia The Church A Divine Society The A CARNAL VIEW OF THE CHURCH Catholic Encyclopedia The Church A Divine Society The supernatural character of the Church is seen, when its relation to the redemptive work of Christ is considered. It is the society of those whom He has redeemed from the world. The world, by which term are signified men in so far as they have fallen from God, is ever set forth in Scripture as the kingdom of the Evil One. It is the "world of darkness" (Ephesians 6: 12), it is "seated in the wicked one" (1 John 5: 19), it hates Christ (John 15: 18). To save the world, God the Son became man. He offered Himself as a propitiation for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2: 2). God, Who desires that all men should be saved, has offered salvation to all; but the greater part of mankind rejects the proffered gift. The Church is the society of those who accept redemption, of those whom Christ "has chosen out of the world" (John 15: 19). Thus it is the Church alone which He "hath purchased with his own blood" (Acts 20: 28). . .

A CARNAL VIEW OF THE CHURCH The Necessary Means of Salvation In the preceding A CARNAL VIEW OF THE CHURCH The Necessary Means of Salvation In the preceding examination of the Scriptural doctrine regarding the Church, it has been seen how clearly it is laid down that only by entering the Church can we participate in the redemption wrought for us by Christ. Incorporation with the Church can alone unite us to the family of the second Adam, and alone can engraft us into the true Vine. Moreover, it is to the Church that Christ has committed those means of grace through which the gifts He earned for men are communicated to them. The Church alone dispenses the sacraments. It alone makes known the light of revealed truth. Outside the Church these gifts cannot be obtained. From all this there is but one conclusion: Union with the Church is not merely one out of various means by which salvation may be obtained: it is the only means.

This comprehensive society they call the church. Thus we speak of the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church - where the word “church” stands for the aggregate of all their local societies. With Baptists it is different. They speak of Baptist churches, but not of the Baptist Church when the entire denomination is meant. The Baptist Church would mean some one local congregation of baptized believers.

A CARNAL VIEW OF THE CHURCH The Local Church (pg. 41) The local church A CARNAL VIEW OF THE CHURCH The Local Church (pg. 41) The local church is a connectional society of persons who have professed their faith in Christ, have been baptized, have assumed the vows of membership in the Methodist church, and are associated in fellowship as local Methodist Church, in order that they may hear the Word of God, receive the Sacraments, and carry forward the work which Christ has committed to his Church.
