British Newspapers • In Britain over 15 million newspapers are read every day. Most of them are printed in Wapping in London. A symbol of the British Press is Fleet Street — a street in London that used to be home of most British national newspapers.

• The papers in Britain are divided into two groups: the quality papers and the tabloids.

3 The serious or quality papers such as The Times, The Guardian, The Financial Times, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph are large in size and have detailed articles about national and international events.

4 • Popular papers or tabloids, such as The Daily Mail, The Sun or The Daily Express , are smaller in size, have shorter articles about less important events (for example private lives of well-known people).

5 • There are daily and Sunday (weekly) papers. • The daily papers such as The Evening News are often bought because people want to know the winner of a race or the result of football pools.

6 Sunday papers The Sunday papers are weekly editions coming out on Sundays. They are national and provide interesting articles on fashion, arts, newly-published books, gardening, cooking, motoring and holidays. Some of them, such as The Sunday Times have a very high reputation and the best critics and journalists write for them.
